Virgin vs By-Product Sulphur: Differences and Which to Buy

By Jay Rankja, Aethon Chemicals · · 3 min read

Short answer: Virgin sulphur is bright yellow, 99.5% min. sulphur recovered at oil refineries such as IOCL, Nayara and Reliance. By-product sulphur powder meets the same specification but comes from other chemical processing, so it is slightly duller in colour and has a mild odour. Choose virgin where colour, odour or a named refinery source matters; by-product sulphur suits fertilisers, sulphur chemicals and general rubber goods, where appearance does not.

Sulphur buyers in India are usually offered two kinds: virgin sulphur from oil refineries, and by-product sulphur recovered from other chemical processing. Both are elemental sulphur (S, CAS 7704-34-9, HSN 25030010). This guide explains what actually differs, whether granules or powder suit you better, and which to choose for your application.

What “virgin” sulphur means

Crude oil and natural gas contain sulphur, which refineries must remove to make clean fuels. It is captured as hydrogen sulphide and converted into elemental sulphur in a sulphur recovery unit. Because it comes straight from this controlled process, refinery sulphur is consistently bright yellow and high in purity — the trade calls it virgin sulphur. In Gujarat and western India, the main sources are the refineries of IOCL, Nayara and Reliance.

What by-product sulphur is

By-product sulphur is elemental sulphur recovered from other chemical processing rather than from a refinery. The material we supply meets the same specification as virgin sulphur powder. Two things are different: the colour is slightly duller, and it has a mild odour. Neither changes how the sulphur performs in most bulk uses — it only matters where the look or smell of the finished product counts, or where a buyer's specification names a refinery source. By-product sulphur is usually the more economical choice.

Granules or powder?

  • Granules are made for melting and burning: sulphuric acid plants, sulphur dioxide generation for sugar sulphitation, and sulphur-enriched fertilisers. They make far less dust, flow well and are safer to handle in bulk.
  • Powder is for uses where sulphur is mixed in as a solid: rubber and tyre compounding, dusting and wettable sulphur for crop protection, and fertiliser blends. Tell us the fineness (mesh) your process needs.

Safety and storage

  • Flammable solid. Sulphur powder is UN1350, Class 4.1. Keep it away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces; burning sulphur gives off toxic sulphur dioxide.
  • Dust. Fine sulphur dust in the air can ignite. Avoid creating dust clouds, earth equipment against static, and keep the area clean.
  • Storage. Store bags in a dry, ventilated area away from oxidising chemicals such as chlorates and nitrates.
  • PPE. Dust mask and goggles when emptying bags.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Not the material we supply: our by-product sulphur powder meets the same specification as virgin sulphur powder. Only the colour is slightly duller and it has a mild odour.

It is recovered from chemical processing rather than an oil refinery, and traces from that process give it a mild odour and a slightly duller colour. This does not affect most bulk uses such as fertilisers and sulphur chemicals.

Virgin sulphur powder is the usual vulcanising agent for tyres and technical rubber. By-product sulphur powder is used for general rubber goods where colour does not matter.

Sulphur (other than sublimed, precipitated and colloidal sulphur) is classified under HSN 25030010.

Sulphur is UN1350, Class 4.1 (flammable solid). Powder ships as Packing Group III; formed granules are generally exempt under IMDG special provision 242.
