Exporting Soda Ash to Bangladesh: Ports, Documents and Packing
Bangladesh is one of the world's largest garment exporters, and its dyeing, washing and soap industries use soda ash every day. India is a short sea voyage away, which makes Indian soda ash (sodium carbonate, CAS 497-19-8) a natural fit. This guide covers what a Bangladeshi importer needs to plan an order.

Light or dense for Bangladeshi buyers?
Bangladesh's textile mills mostly use soda ash to fix reactive dyes and in scouring, where it is dissolved in water — light soda ash is the usual choice. Glass makers use dense. Remember that light soda ash takes about twice the space of dense for the same weight, so a container of light can fill up before it reaches its weight limit. Our guide soda ash light vs dense explains the difference.
Route and ports
- Loading ports: from Gujarat, cargo usually sails from west-coast ports such as Mundra, Hazira or Nhava Sheva.
- Discharge ports: Chattogram handles most of Bangladesh's container trade; Mongla serves the south-west.
- Transhipment: many container services from India's west coast reach Chattogram via a hub port, so check the transit time with your shipping line when you book.
Documents
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the lot
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
- Certificate of origin — ask your importer whether they need a preferential (SAFTA) certificate of origin for a lower import duty
- Bill of lading
- Any additional certificate your importer's bank or LC requires
Your importer arranges the import permit and customs clearance in Bangladesh; we provide the commercial and quality documents and match them exactly to the LC terms.
Payment
Most Bangladeshi importers pay by Letter of Credit (LC). Every document must match the LC wording exactly — product description, HS code, quantity, packing and port — so send us a draft LC before it is issued and we will check it. We also work with advance payment, Documents against Payment (DP), and credit terms for established buyers.
Packing and loading
- 25 kg or 50 kg bags, stacked so they do not shift during the voyage.
- Soda ash absorbs moisture, so containers are inspected to be clean and dry before loading.
- Bags can be marked with your brand or importer details on request.
